Japanese Folk Art Bear - SAI4259
Japanese Folk Art Bear - SAI4259
A traditional Japanese carved wooden bear, worked from a single block of timber and finished in a deep, dark stain that highlights the strong grain. The bear is shown in a powerful forward stance, mouth open with carved teeth and tongue adding expressive detail. The fur is rendered through bold, rhythmic chisel work, giving the piece movement and a wonderfully tactile surface.
The carving displays the hallmarks of early Hokkaidō Ainu folk sculpture — robust modelling, lively texture, and an emphasis on natural presence. The underside retains honest hand-cut tool marks, confirming its fully hand-made origin. A striking, characterful bear with excellent form and a commanding silhouette.
