A fantastic 19th Century military campaign roll-top writing slope, crafted from solid camphor wood with brass binding to all edges. This exceptional lap desk features a central brass plaque on the fall, echoing the shape of the flush inset brass carrying handles and small front handle, which is complete with its original lock and key. Cleverly constructed, pulling open the lower drawer activates the roll-top mechanism above, smoothly sliding it back to reveal a pop-up compartment fitted with a bank of pigeonholes. Wooden spring levers to either side lock this section in place, while pressing them inward allows the compartment to lower neatly out of sight. The writing surface is lined in green baize and conceals a delightful secret—when a steel peg is inserted into a discreet hole, it releases a hidden compartment containing two concealed drawers. The mellow tone of the camphor wood, paired with its remarkable patination developed over years of use and care, gives this piece both warmth and character. In excellent antique condition with only minor scuffs and marks appropriate to its age, this highly functional and beautifully crafted box would make a stunning addition to any study, library, or collector’s cabinet.
