Outstanding Waring and Gillows knee hole desk with original tooled leather writing surface. A solid mahogany desk with stunning flame mahogany veneers and gilded carvings. This wonderfully shaped desk has an arrangement of 3 carved drawers in the frieze and a bank of 3 drawers to either side. All the mahogany lined drawers run smooth, retain original handles and locks (Hobbs & Co). Raised on 4 carved gilded bracket feet to the front and beautifully turned gilded feet to the back. Waring & Gillow was a noted firm of English furniture manufacturers and antique dealers formed in 1897 by the merger of Gillows of Lancaster and London and Waring of Liverpool.
Alfred Charles Hobbs (1812 – 1891) formed a company in London which was formally registered as Hobbs & Co. The firm went through various incarnations becoming Hobbs, Ashley & Co in 1855 and then Hobbs, Ashley & Fortescue and finally Hobbs, Hart & Co in 1860 based in Cheapside in London. They were very successful using advanced machine production methods.
