A distinguished half‑length oil on canvas portrait by Alan Sutherland ARR (b. 1931), depicting Sir Duncan Mackay Weatherstone MC TD (1892–1972). Sutherland portrays Sir Weatherstone in formal attire adorned with his ceremonial chain of office and military decorations. This fine gentleman with a composed expression conveying both authority and dignity, hallmarks of Sutherland’s portraiture during this period. Signed and dated 1968 lower right. The reverse bears a handwritten label identifying the sitter, together with a framer’s label for John Mathieson, Fine Art Dealers and Picture Frame makers, Edinburgh, adding useful provenance. A strong and expressive example of Sutherland’s mid‑century portrait work, combining technical skill with a keen sense of character.
