A charming Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) depicting two rabbits resting among tall grasses beneath a full moon. One rabbit, warm brown and alert, sits upright while the other, a soft white is nestles lower in the foliage. The grasses and wildflowers are painted with elegant, fluid strokes in gentle tones of green, blue and violet. The pale moon above lends a gentle radiance to the scene, a motif long associated with autumn, reflection and poetic beauty in Japanese art. To the right, a vertical inscription in flowing calligraphy is accompanied by two red artist’s seals, adding balance and authenticity to the work. The painting is mounted on a richly patterned gold brocade with plain silk sections above and below, all in very good condition and ready to hang.
